3 (c) States of Matter

The universe is made of matter.  Matter is stuff, things you can touch.  A type of matter is called a medium.  Matter is anything that has mass (or inertia) and takes up space (meaning volume).  Some energy like sound can only travel through a medium or matter.  Other energy like light and UV can travel through empty space.

Matter comes three ways, what we call phases.  Or we call them states- solid, liquid, and gas.  Solids have a definite shape and volume.  Liquids have a definite volume but NOT a definite shape.  A gas does NOT have a definite volume or shape.  We can compress or expand gas.  Compressed gas is how we make our paper rocket fly.
